The form makes a vital Benzie County distinction: BCSO does not provide Michigan criminal-history reports and sends those requests to ICHAT. Sheriff FOIA retrieves sheriff source documents. It cannot turn another agency's report into a BCSO file merely because the person was booked at the county jail.

Sealed, Expunged & Restricted

Michigan uses “setting aside” as the formal term for relief commonly called expungement. MI-VINE can provide custody status and confidential notifications. MiCOURT can show charges, hearings, bond, and warrant entries, but it is not a real-time physical-custody system.

The MDOC OTIS explanation states that OTIS covers qualifying state prisoners, parolees, and probationers, including certain people discharged from supervision within three years.

OTIS excludes county-jail-only cases, city lockups, people not yet sentenced to MDOC, and people beyond its stated discharge window.

The official OTIS offender search accepts an MDOC number or name and offers filters such as sex, race, age, and status.

A profile may show current status, location, sentence information, supervision location, discharge dates, and public physical descriptors, but MDOC warns against treating OTIS as a full background check.

Benzie County's Seasonal Record Map

Benzie County had 17,970 residents in the 2020 Census and a 2024 estimate of 18,520. The sheriff reports that summer population can exceed 50,000.
